As Spring gracefully prepares to bow out in preparation for Summer’s arrival, it’s a natural time for us to notice a shift in our energy. For many of us these last few weeks of Spring can feel both demanding and exciting. Many may welcome and embrace the active shift, but for some of us the fiery transition may feel a bit overwhelming.
In Chinese Medicine, Summer’s vibrant energy aligns with the Fire element, the Heart organ and the emotion of joy and sound of laughter. As the days lengthen and the sun shines brighter, we see the natural environment’s energy change with the season. With that our internal energy follows suit. We may notice a natural increase in our energy, both mentally and physically.
We can create a smoother transition into Summer by being mindful of our Fire element. When we’re aligned with the season’s vibrant yang energy, we can set ourselves up for more balance.
Here are some tips to support our bodies through the seasonal and energetic shifts for optimal health and balanced living.
Connect
Summer is connected to the Heart organ, the emotion of joy and the sound of laughter. With the longer days and warmer weather, we may find ourselves craving more social connection - camping with friends or music festivals anyone?
Nourish Appropriately
Avoid heavy greasy foods, instead reach for foods that are more cooling. Our local farmer’s market is great place to eat with the season. Reach for refreshing watermelon, light cooling summer squash, and antioxidant-rich berries.
Stay Hydrated
To keep the Fire element in check, we need to support our Yin fluids, the body’s cooling energy. In addition to eating cooling foods, that also means staying hydrated with properly filtered water and electrolytes, herbal teas, or cooling drinks like watermelon juice.
Move Your Body
Take advantage of the longer days. Get your body moving in ways that feel good for your heart. Cardio and resistance training are a great combination. Even better, dance it out to your favourite music, this can nourish your heart in more ways than one.
Balance the Fire by Supporting Your Yin
Even with Summer’s energetic yang fire energy, it’s important to nourish your yin with some downtime. Hot afternoons are perfect for a quiet nap in the shade or indoors. Acupuncture naps can be wonderfully rejuvenating. If you don’t mind the temporary marks peeking through your summer attire, cupping therapy is another great way to release excess heat. And most of all, be sure to get a good night’s sleep.
